  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Too fat/Too thin how can u check?

Ok what i mean is how can u telll if ur bunny is the right weight?

Kitten was chubby when she came to me i could tell because she had trouble cleaning her bottom and she didnt run around very much. She now is lovely and clean and belts about like a crazy fool so she must feel better.

I know with dogs its if u can feel the ribs but not see them then thats right for most but with bunnies and all there fluff how ca u check? Dont want her too skinny!

p.s she has an egg cup of light pellets, 2 bowls of greens, and unlimited hay

With buns, you have to go with touch mostly, you should be able to feel the ribs/spine are there but they shouldn't feel prominent, like there is nothing between them and the skin.

Weight is a good indicator too, ask you vet for the ideal weight for your rabbit next time you have a check up eg for jabs and then you can check it regularly on the scales.

You could always invite local bunny friendly friends round for a coffee and second opinion ;)

Other than that you should be able to feel their bones but they shouldnt be sticking out. A vet should be able to advise on that. How is she doing now? Is she healing well?

Hiya u are always welcome to pop around anytime, il send matt out playing golf and then we can have a good old natter.

The vet said she looked and felt fine was just a wonder really? Shes not too skinny just about right i think she just lost a little bit of weight last week i think but she looks better for it. She is back full strength again now wound all healed up and her hair is growing back nicely, she is eating and pooping well again. Glad its all done tho i was scared all week! She is also litter box trained now as well and doesnt use her hutch anymore chooses to sleep either on the doormat or in her wicker basket! So cute x

That all sounds good and healthy. I remember B and C felt like they were thinner straight after they had been spayed and I suppose there is a bit less bun there. Glad she is doing well

Actually i hadnt really thought after that but she has had things taken away and a couple of days of eating less! U know u are welcome anythime next time u pop in on Bobs give me a call im only 5 mins away xxx Kitten would love to see u xxx and u can give me some tips on this future bonding that hopefully should be happening in the next few weeks x

My vet records my buns' weight when they visit so we can keep an eye on them that way. I did think some of them may be overweight but he said he could feel their spines and they were OK. Sadly, Sue is extremely underweight as she is poorly.

I find it difficult to tell if my buns are the correct weight as it seems to change according to their position. The outdoor buns get more pellets in the winter as I prefer them to be a bit chunkier then. They are more active at the moment too with the nicer weather so I think that is keeping their weight off.
