Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Old bun losing weight- what tests at vets?

Hi guys .

My old lady is 9 years old now. Shes been losing weight slowly for around 2 years now. My last vets monitored her weight and she had regular health check-ups- including bloods, and she said it seems to be just old age.

Now my bun is very skinny. She used to weigh around 3kg, and went down to around 2.3kg the first year (but she was a bit of a fatty to start - at 2.3 she looked just a little underweight, but still toned and muscly). She was weighed back in feb and was around 1.9kg. Now shes looking quite bad- she used to be such a muscly rabbit (kicked me and gave me the only nose bleed of my life when i gave her meds once) but just looks puney now! This doesnt stop her gettin around though- she can still out run me!

Im taking her to the vets tomorrow for a check up as im concerned about the weight loss, and think she may have hurt her back leg/spine as shes walking a little funny. Im going to get bloods taken, but is there anything else i should ask for? She had liver and kidney levels which were double what they should be once, the vet doesnt know why, and they returned to normal. She was also spayed aged 5 as i didnt realise the importance of spaying females when she was young. The vets found abnornmal growths in her womb they thought could be cancer, but we didnt get it sent off as the vets said even if they know its that, theres nothing they can do. Could cancer somewhere else cause weightloss with no other obvious symptoms? Its been 4 years and the vets said it normally spreads before then.

Any tips on helping to fatten her up if it is just her age? She gets unlimited excel junior and dwarf pellets (as she has never eaten hay-she went into statis once when i tried no food and only hay- shes stubbon :( ) as well as veg, fattening treats and recently oats which she loves. Shes with 3 other buns so a change in pellets isnt ideal- espcially as it took me 2 years to get her from a mix to a pellet!

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the rambling post, i tend to talk a lot!

Has she had her teeth checked on a regular basis ?

Dental problems are high on my list of suspects given her age and the fact that she has never eaten hay.

I'ld want kidneys and sugar checked
I'ld also want to cover her for EC with lapazole for preference or panacur especially given her dodgy leg but agree with Jane re choppers.
Bless her though battling in!!!! Have you tried her with a tablespoon of critical care mixed into a paste? It may help supplement her calories and keep her little guts working.
9 is a great aged but also heart breaking
