Having trouble finding a vets that doesn't use Cylap (Worcester)

yaretzi

Wise Old Thumper
Pretty much as the title! Need my buns doing in about 3-4 weeks, but finding it difficult to find any vets that don't use cylap.

Their response is 'we've never had any problems with it'. And I don't have the time at the moment to put together a letter/info pack explaining why they shouldn't use cylap.

I also need to find a rabbit savvy vet for Täplä's ongoing snuffles episodes, I want to put her onto a long course of 2 months of baytril as many others have reported this has cleared it up for them. But I want a proper rabbit savvy vet :(

Anyone know any in Worcester?

you could try asking your vet to order in lampinject or anivac? i've asked mine thay said thay would but i would have to cover the cost of the batch myself coz it comes in 5 doses, thats ok but i have 6 rabbits so will need to pay for 10 doses! (**** vet!!). needless to say i will be ringing around other vets,i think anivac comes in a single dose.

Ask them to order in Anivac for you. They can do this and it will cost the same as their jabs with Cylap. If they won't do this, change vets.

There are two alternatives to cylap. Lapinject which comes in a bottle which can do five animals but once opened, must be used that day. Or Anivac, which comes in separately sealed vials of 10, so it can be used by other customers.

There is absolutely no need for you to have to pay for the other four vaccines. They can be used by other people who will pay for them as normal.

You can explain that the reason why these vaccines are preferable is because they don't cause a reaction in rabbits - 50% of whom have a palpable reaction using Cylap. Also, Anivac is much safer for vets to use as it doesn't use a mineral oil as a carrier for the vaccine. This means it is not only safer for the rabbit but also for the person injecting. It is the mineral oil that causes the problem.

I forgot to mention I've asked all the ones I've spoken to and they've flat out refused. I've asked the receptionist and those are the ones who refused, and I've asked to speak to the vet (at a convenient time for him) or to send a letter to him but the receptionist said she won't forward it. I'd have to book a consultation to speak with the vet directly.

I've tried explaining that NOAH has updated their information to 'up to 50%' but they still remain adamant there's no problem since they haven't experienced one at the practice. The mineral oil stuff is useful though, I might use that to try to help sway them.

Thanks for your advice everyone. I wish they were more cooperative! I'll get there eventually, but I'm kinda worrying about it since the buns are moving outside next week so it's imperative that they remain vaccinated :s

Also, the one vets I haven't asked yet charge £27.60 for each vaccine, as well as an initial consultation cost of £25.42 & a subsequent consultation cost of £16.52 for a second rabbit.

So to get 2 x VHD and 2 x myxo jabs it will cost me £110.40 for the jabs, plus another £83.88 for the consultations.

Er, nearly £200 for their jabs? Bit extortionate..

I'm not sure what injection they use though.

I use acorn vets in study as I believe thats the vets that hopper haven use. They do use cylap but they might be able to help with the snuffes??

if the receptionist is that unhelpful you need to complain about her
Go in and ask her again..if she refuses ask to see her superior..and complain..don't leave until you've seen someone as her attitude stinks

Re the charge and consult fees..if you book for a vacs most vets would not charge you a consult as by law they must check the animal is healthy before administering the vacs..so a health check is included

Ring round..I'm sure some others will be more helpful :D

De Montfort vets in Evesham and Pershore use Lapinject.

No more than a half hour trip to Evesham, and about 15/20 mins to Pershore if you are coming from Worcester.

I have been using these vets for 16 years. Never had any problems at all. They have a very bunny savvy vet, always extremely helpful and professional.

Give them a call perhaps. 01386 446095.

Oo fab, thanks to you both :D! It's a little further than I wanted, but mine don't hate their carrier TOO much, and it's worth it for a vet who knows his stuffs :)

I'm coming from Droitwich so it's not too far to Pershore - think Pershore is slightly closer than Evesham :D

Pershore is 6 miles closer than Eveham.

The bunny savvy vet is usually based at Evesham and doesn't work full time. Please don't panic though, they are brilliant with bunnies. I have used them for many years and always extremely pleased with their care, courtesy, experience and all in all general conduct.

PM me if you want any further details or just some re-assurance.

Best of luck.

Blooming cheek:

''Dear Gabriella,

Thank you for your email, we do indeed use "Cylap" for our VHD vaccines and unfortunately unless you wanted to buy them in bulk we could not order the two you mentioned.

Also all our vets are knowledgeable in rabbit care so please feel free to contact us and book an appointment for them to be seen.

Many thanks''

So I replied:

Hi,

''Although I agree that Lapinject comes in a bottle which must be used that day, Anivac comes in separately sealed vials of 10 and so there is no reason at all why I should have to pay for the bulk amount when there is no reason you couldn’t use it for other clients who will pay as normal.

The reason Lapinject and Anivac are preferable to Cylap is the rise in problems with Cylap. NOAH have updated their information to state that ‘up to 50% of rabbits have a palpable reaction using Cylap’, which is usually a festering necrosis several inches across, resulting in huge amount of discomfort and pain, large vet bills and in several hundred cases – death. Also, Anivac is much safer for the veterinarian themselves to use as it uses mineral oil as a carrier for the vaccine.

Unfortunately, the fact that your practice continues to use Cylap despite the manufacturers themselves changing their information signals to me that your vets are not knowledgeable about rabbits at all, so I’d rather go to a practice that gets the basics right.

Thanks for your time, hopefully you might pass this on to whoever makes the decision regarding which medicines to use, as cylap has caused several hundred rabbit deaths in this country so far and will continue to do so unless veterinarians stop using it.

Thanks, Gabriella''

Cough, several hundred is a bit of an exaggeration but nevermind

Fabulous, thanks for the info :D Which is the vet that's particularly good with buns at Evesham?

Jeremy on here uses Lowesmoor Vets in Worcester, so it's really nice to know I have 2 different vet practices I can use that are both knowledgeable :D

More knowledgeable than Townsend vets who I've just replied back to. Bloody cheek of them saying I need to pay for injections they can use for other clients!

The exceptionally bunny savvy vet is Andy Barside or Barwise, not quite sure which. I just know him as Andy.:D:D:love:

I have used the other vets in the practice from time to time................no complaints there either.
