  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

No I don't think so. I've looked up it and smelt it, and we think its just discolouring. It isn't wet nor crusty. I will keep an eye on it

Yellow staining on and around the nostrils is usually due to a clear nasal discharge (which may or may not be clinically significant) and hay dust/dirt sticking to the dampness, drying and then appearing to stain the fur yellow. You really only notice it on a white nosed rabbit. Nino had stained yellow nostrils on and off for his whole life. Probably a combination of allergic rhinitis and a sub-clinical infection that his immune system kept under control.

You may find that dustier hay or certain hays/pollens will aggravate this. It is believed that rabbits can get allergic rhinitis when previously thought this wasn't possible. :?

Ahh I think it must be the hay he is on. I'm really unimpressed with it, its lovely and green and hes eating loads of it but his poo's still aren't golden brown and now his nose is discloured. Its alfalfa king timothy hay and cost me much more than the pets at home stuff i used to get which gave him golden poos. I won't be getting it again. It says dust free but the actual hay doesn't feel like it at all. I'll try him on another type and see if the discolouring goes then.

It's a good hay but as very green and young it will make the droppings darker - this doesn't mean they are not as good. Dark droppings are fine as waste droppings, no worse than golden droppings. The only droppings of concern are SMALL and DRY.

It is a dusty hay though at times - due to fractured seed heads and leaf material - but remember - it will only stain the nostrils if there is exudate on the nostrils in the first place so you will need to monitor his nostrils to check there is not excessive discharge or that it does not become purulent.
