  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ear problem - solutions please!

Today we took our boy Dylan along with his dad Belle to our dental vet some 75 minutes away. Belle had his monthly dental and Dylan had his ears looked at. He's suffered ear problems for ages, going back and forth to our local vet who said it was wax and always prescribed Canaual. After taking swabs and discounting ear mites the vet discovered deep down his ears were sticky and stank. He has been prescribed antibiotics, which are not meant for rabbits, and we had to agree to try these but the downside is, he or our other rabbits cannot lick the solution at all as it will affect their gut and could kill them. They live in the house so we can keep an eye on them but Dylan keeps scratching his ears then trying to lick his foot, urgh!!!! We will be frightened to go to sleep for the next 10 days, any solutions please? :?:?:?:?

When you apply it do you massage the ear base for 1-2 minutes ? This should help disperse the drops and minimise leakage.

Apart from using a Buster Collar (which I have never done when treating otitis) then you are not going to be able to stop him scratching or grooming his ears.
Hence trying to minimise leakage is probably your best option.

Other Rabbits licking his ears will put them at risk, so if this is an issue you will need to separate him whilst he is on treatment.

Is he on systemic antibiotics too ?
