Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bladder Stones...

Have anyone had a bun have surgery for a bladder stone?

How did they recover?

Harley's going in for an ultra sound and possible x-ray if the scan is no good, she's had this possible stone for near on 6 months and its finally causing her a issue.

Of course, we are also considering it to be a tumour of some sort but we shall find out tomorrow.

I am almost certain if it is a stone she will go ahead and have the surgery there and then and have her teeth burred (That's another issue :( )

Artie had surgery for bladder sludge, to the best of my knowledge there were no stones as such but the sludge was so thick it had to be surgically removed as it would have caused damage to his tubes and risked blocking them if they had tried to send it out the normal route.

He had a cystotomy, not sure of this is the surgery for removing stones but I'm guessing it is.

Artie recovered well bless him. He stayed at the vets 6 days after the surgery (my vets keep them a long time as they like to see good recovery before they go home). He was on strong painkillers for the first few days. That's a bit over two years ago and he's had an excellent quality of life as a result of the surgery. He needs his bladder expressing every 6 weeks and daily meds to keep on top of it, not sure what the prognosis is for stones returning though.

Good luck with the outcome, I was scared witless when Artie was undergoing it but the difference it's made to his life is amazing.
