  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit Savvy Vet???

I've never really had a problem with my vets, i have heard some awful stories:oops: but people make stories much worse around here
They have always helped with my dogs so it's never really been a big issue.

When we got our bunnies we obviously took them to our own vets.
However after they sexed them both wrong and then after losing Peter.... I'm blaming myself for taking him to that vet! Would the same thing of happened if I bothered to find a better one i will never know?! but I need to live with my decision now but i thought i could trust the vet to look after my rabbit?

Time for a change? How do i find a good rabbit savvy vet? I'd expect all vet's to be able to deal with rabbit's properly? Clearly not the case :( so how do i go about finding the best vets for my animals?

A rabbit savvy vet is classed as an exotic vet/specialist.
My vets are not exotic specialists but they have an exotic specialist they call for advise if needbe.
They do however see quite a few rabbits so are quite rabbit savvy and have always offered our babies excellent care.

Post in rabbit chat a thread titled rabbit savvy vet needed in ...

There's a bit of info in this thread:

http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?t=48144

You might also try asking them some "test" questions, eg what treatment they would recommend for certain health conditions, whether they recommend neutering and spaying, what advice they would give before and after these ops, what antibiotics they use for rabbits.

See if they have any specific vet in the practice who takes a particular interest in rabbits. I used to seem to see a different vet every time I visited, but recently I've found out that one of them specialises in rabbits, and I always ask for an appointment with her now :)

Put a thread up in rabbit chat, stating your area and that you want a rabbit savvy vet.

It is good to read that someone is changing there vet.:D As you know, rabbits really are nothing like dogs, cats etc.

I have to live with the fact that I lost rabbits when I was younger due to my old vets incompetence with them, I know how much it hurts:cry:

My now vet has told me all the things he would have done for them. I don't know if this makes it better or worse TBH:?

Oh I know that feeling!!!!
Think lots of us have trusted vets that we really shouldn't have done!!!!
Good luck and I agree with all of the advise above xxx

Sometimes vets don't specialise in exotics but just become rabbit savvy from years and years of experience with rabbits.
