Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Probable tooth abcess

Hello everyone, I havent posted for a long time but often visit the forum.

Just needed to check in with other rabbity people as its only rabbity people who really understand lol

Ive noticed a big abcess on the side of one of my rabbits face this afternoon and he has a weepy eye. Gizmo is five and a half and has had about four dentals over the last coule of years so teeth are an ongoing problem. He's booked in with the vet tomorrow and Im hoping for a favorable prognosis but I think whats bothering me the most is that my first ever rabbit when I was a child had to be put down because he had a reoccuring tooth abcess. That was 25 years ago though and vet care has moved on thank goodness but its uncanny as Gizmo is so much like my first rabbit in his nature, personality and appearance. It just seems a little bizarre that Gizmo should now be suffering the same problem as my first bunny did. Its almost like history repeating itself!

Anyway, if any one has any tooth abcess happy endings stories they would like to share Im sure that would really cheer me up and stop me spending the evening worrying my head off! Thank you

Sorry I cant help but didnt want to read and run so am bumping this up for you.

Also sending vibes for your bunny that all will be ok and is something treatable.

yes vet care has moved on. also depends on the vet! when you say the abscess were recurring, its possible that there was an undetected underlying issue. you could take your rabbit to one vet who would say to pts and then another rabbit savvy one who would think that the bunny is going to be fine :S thats rabbit medicine for you! have you got a very good rabbit savvy vet? sounds like you are going to need one. if you have/get one i am sure you bunny has a very good chance of recovering.

my Barney has had a retrobulbar (behind eye) abscess since november. i have only just got him to the specialist this week (yes i do feel awful about this) but she cleaned out his eye cavity and saved his eye.
this was due to his back teeth but he is having a blood test to check for underlying issues. he is due to come home today. so kind of a good news story but i will know more later today.
