  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Any suggestions or options for a treatment plan? *desperate!*

Sky-O

Wise Old Thumper
Erm, complicated bunny and health history.

In March
Been groomed over her kidney area by her husbunny.

Screamed one night (has not screamed since to our knowledge).

Not eating. Improved with one day of Metacam for that day. Not given Metacam after and lost appetite.

Now
Lethargic and 'meh' (deteriorating all the time)

Protruding spine, big, large belly

Producing very odd shaped poo (over large, not spherical), with a liquid

Very dirty now underneath.

No diagnostics done, but panacured, tried fribreplex, profibre pellets and hay only diet.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon, just want to wish your poorly bun lots of get well vibes.x

What age? Is she spayed? Has the vet groped her tummy to check for masses?

Is she on a hay only diet at the moment? It's possible you're treating for digestive problems with lots of fibre but in doing so she's not getting enough calories which is causing the protruding spine and lethargy. I would add in some higher calorie foods - alfalfa would be a good one as that's higher calorie but still fibrous. I'd also add some junior pellets and/or some porridge oats.

Thank you.

Roughly 3, yes, spayed, and at a much younger age (they opened her up recently to check and she was definitely spayed prior to that).

Ok. Good advice RE the calories. I'm not treating her myself, but can pass this onto those that are :)

That's good, I was wondering about uterine cancer (as you probably guessed), it doesn't rule out some other mass in her abdomen but that's much less common that uterine in a young doe.

Was the spay check recent.. did she recover fully after that and then go down hill, or never get back to tip top condition. Just wondering if she could have some complication from that.

At three I'd have thought that any genetic abnormalities in her digestion would have already shown up.

It's probably going to be one of those rule things out rather than hit on the answer issues as there are so many possibilities. The digestive issues could just be secondary. An xray or ultrasound might show what is causing the distended belly, whether it's fluid build up or a mass or gas in her gut something else etc.

The spay recheck came after she was surrendered for being ill and the owner being unable to afford care for her (so after the screaming at night, the lack of appetite). When she arrived she had no appetite so they had to wait for the spay recheck until she was doing a bit better, but her poos have been horrendous throughout.

Sadly, there will be no diagnostics done because of the financial state that the Centre is in (and a small issue with the vets), and that's part of the reason that I want to get her into a home where she can get those tests and the treatment she needs.

I think basically what it comes down to is that the vets specialisms like elsewhere and she has no idea what's going on. That about sums it up in a nutshell.
