Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Possible sore hock?

Young Bun
Ive noticed today that my 4 month old mini lop has a red patch on one of her feet. Its no bigger than the end of a biro and she seems fine in herself. Ive never had a rabbit with sore hocks before so am unsure whether there is anything else it could be. It looks almost like a blister? She had her myxi jab yesterday but I can't see how that could be related?
Bedding wise she has newspaper covered in plenty of hay.
Ive tried to get a picture but she isn't too keen being held for long so don't want to upset her!

It does sound like it could be a sore hock, are you able to bath it with some cooled boiled water to make sure it is clean and to stop it getting infected, then if you can, pop some medical grade manuka honey on to it for a few days.
If it does not clear up by doing this or gets at all worse then you will need to pop her to the vets.

It's quite normal for them to have a pink-ish circle of calloused skin on the hocks; I can't find a photo but both of my bunnies have them and when I searched old threads found it was nothing to be concerned about.

I've read that it's not a good idea to put creams etc on unless they're actually sore as this will flatten the surrounding fur and potentially make them worse.

If the skin is very red, broken or bleeding, that means it's getting sore and needs to be looked at by a vet. She will also need to be kept on soft bedding (which it sounds as though you're already doing). :thumb:

Thanks for the advice. I wish I could get a picture but its near enough impossible with this wriggler! Its definately more pink than red and there still fur around it. I'll definately keep my eye on it, maybe even use a blanket for bedding.
