Volunteering? Looking for friends? (Scotland)

Hi there

I'm em-j and bunnymother to Benjamin, a lovely general mediumish house rabbit.
Urm well i'm currently unemployed and wont be returning to work for the foreseeable future due to an illness called Fibromyalgia (http://www.ukfibromyalgia.com/) as well as depression.
As a result I'm not really doing that much and slowly going a bit insane (or some would say I never was sane to begin with!).
I'm wondering if there is anyone in the central Scotland area, (I live in Fallin near Stirling) who has a bunny rescue or lots of pet bunnies that need attention and help? I sadly can't drive, but can use public transport. I also have a walking stick and can find lifting heavy things hard too.

Animals help with my depression, being around Ben helps cheer me up on bad days, as just talking to him or storking him makes me feel infinately better, and seems to make Ben happy too. I'd like to help other bunnies who aren't getting enough love perhaps?

I'd love to socialise Ben a bit more as well if that was possible, and I'm currently training him to do Jummping/Hopping but its a slow process since I got him as an adult. If there's anyone in Scotland who does Hopping or has an interest in it, I'd love to talk/meet up and try doing so together.

Despite being laughed at by my fiance and his family I would like to get a pet stroller for Ben so I can take him new places to explore and be safe at the same time. Anyone else up for bunny walks?

If there's anyone in Scotland looking for friends or help give me a shout. I can do craft work (sewing/cards/cross-stitch/knitting/etc), as well as being handy with tools (built Ben's hutch on my own), so if helping that way would be useful to someone let me know.

Many thanks
em-j

Hi Em-J

Its a shame you don't live nearer me because I'd happily help you get involved with my local RSPCA (where I volunteer). I'm sorry that you're struggling with those problems, but your attitude is brilliant and I agree, bunnies and animals can help ease things like this.

I hope that you do manage to find someone to volunteer with, and I also look forward to seeing you around the forum :)

Take care

Tracy

Hi Em-J
I think the closest rescue to you is in Falkirk. Collielover runs it. I don't know many details so you would have to contact her to find out more, or maybe she will see this thread :)

There is Fife Rabbit rescue as well, I know Kareen welcomes volunteers, but it may be a bit of a faf to get there on public transport. The website is http://www.fiferabbitrescue.co.uk if you want to check it out.

I think there are a few people on here from the Glasgow, Falkirk and Fife areas. Just have a look around the forum and start posting and I'm sure you will make some new friends :) I don't really know many people too well either as I don't always have time to come on here that often.

Thanks.
I really hope someone might need my help.
I've had a fair bit of experience from breeding, showing, handling, training, domesticating (taming a wild rabbit), building hutches, bunnyproofing gardens and homes...
I'm sadly not allowed to get a second bunny to befriend Ben, as my future father in law, who I live with is worried about Ben not getting along with a second bunny meaning we need two hutches, double the space etc...

Hello and welcome

If you are worried about a second bunny and them not getting along with Ben you needn't be concerned. Rescues will take back a rabbit that doesn't work and many often offer a bonding service anyway.

I'll contact Collielover and see if they need any help. I'd love to go over if they need a hand. Take Ben along too if they'd let me. He's fixed, chipped and jabbed (well will be up to date on friday).
Hoping I can ge my own place eventually with either a garden or a big room I can dedicate to bunnies. Think a standard double room could be split into 3 compounds for bunny pairs to live in...
Fife is a touch out the way, but if I can help do any fundraising I'd be happy too... Let me know? I make cards and do art so could try selling them

Hi Em-J

Welcome to the forum

Sadly I can't help in terms of helping you find a rescue near you to volunteer at as I don't know Scotland at all, but I wanted to say I think it's a great thing you're wanting to do :) I totally agree with you that being round animals will hopefully help you with your illnesses & help you make new friends :)

Perhaps it might help to amend your thread title to say you're looking to volunteer in Scotland? The Scottish members on here will help I'm sure if they can :)

You'll find a lot of support on here - it's a great community & we're a friendly bunch :) Hope you enjoy joining RU :)

Good luck,

Denise

Still getting them to let me have a second one is the problem. House isnt totally bunnyproof, though the hutch is big enough for two, and Ben has the run of the kitchen all the time with other rooms when people are with him.

Hi! I foster for a rescue called fairly beloved rabbit care. They are based in lenzie, glasgow and I am not sure if you're a bit far away to foster for. They don't have a centre but as of Monday I will have four foster buns for them as well as my own three. I would love to meet up regardless and could pick you up from Lenzie train station or come to you. It would be worth getting in touch with David at fairly beloved though, there are a few buns looking for partners and he may well have ways foryou to get involved. Great to hear from someone local!!

I think that Collie lover would be a good first contact, she is probably the closest to you.

Just a side note, you really won't be able to take your Bunny along with you to meet the rabbits, unless it was to choose one to take home bonded with your bunny.

hi em-j

I think its great what you are hoping to do, good luck :D

I'm hoping that I can persuade the FFiL to let me take Ben to see about finding a bond friend. I still have the other hutch if anything were to go wrong, though I would worry greatly.
In the past my previous 3 bunnies were all bonded together, and they even were friends with a friend's rabbits. That's why I wondered if it woudl be possible to socialise him.
I know groups of rabbits attend things like Jumping or Agility events, but not sure if they get to socalise or not, so would like Ben to be at least passive/disinterested when suddely faced with large amounts of rabbits.

Fibro sucks! Its hell on doing some things with Ben, but working around them and finding new ways to do things and other stuff to do.
Really want to get a stroller or shoulder carrier so I can take Ben out and about with me. He's a very inquisitive rabbit who hops about at the end of a lead exploring.

Not sure if I could be a foster mum as I'm not allowed any more rabbits in the house at present, and the garden needs to be made completely secure before I'd think about putting hutches outside. But I'd be willing ot try helping out any other bunnyfosterers. It would be nice to interact with people who have rabbits, talk about techniques and stuff...

I know i can get the train from Stirling to Lenzie, so maybe meeting up sometime would be nice. I could help you with your new foster charges, love just sitting stroking buns or grooming them or playing with toys...
