  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What are these diseases??

Young Bun
Tilted head? Stasis? VHD? You guys all seem to know so much more than me! Sometimes Louis looks at me with his head cocked to one side - is this tilted head???

I'm a little worried as we have moved to a new city and I haven't had time to get him a new vet yet. Also I've never brushed him because times are tough and I didn't think a brush was an essential purchase. Will he start dying of hairballs??? I joined this forum for reassurance but the more I read the worse a parent I fear I am!!

I dont think your bunny will die of hairballs  How about a slightly damp hand, and smooth him with it? Should help to collect loose hairs.

Has he had his myxi and VHD vacs? Should try to get done ASAP if you haven't already :) Your question about VHD indicates a no on that one at least.

ermmmmmm I've lost his vaccination card (bad parent) but I'm pretty sure he's only had myxi. He doesn't mix with other buns just lives inside... although there is a kitten scampering around these days! What is VHD?

You'll know if it's head tilt...

:)

With most things just follow along and have a read. VHD and myxo need vaccinations though. Myxo every 6 months and VHD every year, whether the rabbit is inside or out.

Stasis is when the gut goes into slowdown, basically they should be grazing a lot, if they stop eating for several hours, or even just a few if they are showing signs of being lethargic and not interested, it means they need a vet. :)

Head tilt is the name given to a symptom which your bun may get due to various illnesses. It sometimes comes on slowly and your bun will start by being a bit disorientated and off-balance and will progress to having his head at a funny angle and falling/rolling over. Sometimes head tilt comes on suddenly and the first signs will be the wonky head and rolling over.

Awe you're not a bad bunny parent, owning a rabbit is a HUGE learning curve!I've had bunnies for 15 years & I still feel overwhelmed at times by my lack of knowledge:roll: This is a great site where people will always be on hand to offer advice and/or support & there's plenty to learn on here. Wishing you lots of happy bunny years & fun. x
