Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spaying and vaccinations

I am thinking of getting Bramble a partner. What age can you get a doe spayed, and vaccinated please?

It will vary vet to vet for spaying, some say a certain age, some say a certain weight, othes judge individually.

For vaccinations, I believe it depends on the vaccine, but mostly from ages too young to be separated from mum, if you're looking at a baby.

Vaccinated is I think anytime after 6-8 weeks for Myxi and 10 weeks for VHD. Spay is around 6 months, but some vets will do it earlier depending on how big she is.

I thought myxi was 6 weeks+ and VHD 8 weeks+ ?

That's what I was told at my vet anyway.

Maybe then... either way it's quite young! You'll be best off talking to your vet to find out what they do

Might just depend on the vet. My vets are not rabbit specialists or anything but they've always done a pretty good job with the rabbits and the degus so far. They do have a small animal vet there though so that's a plus.

Thank you. The girlie I am looking at was born in Feb I think, so she would be fine for vaccinations.

Depending where she is coming from, it would be preferably for her to arrive vaccinated to protect Bramble, so that might be worth discussing with whoever currently has her. Also, remember to quarantine any bunny coming into your home (the only time it may be ok not to would be a reputable rescue and the rabbit come with a vet/health check).

I would look to get her vaccinated straight away. Then spayed as soon as I can. She would be kept in a seperate hutch until spayed and bonded.
