  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How soon to neuter?

Hi everyone, just a quick question. How young can boy bunnies be when they can be neutered? I've called the vets and they say 6 months, looked on the internet and it says as soon as the 'plumbs' are showing which can be 3 months. You can slightly see where his 'plumbs' will be as they are showing a wee bit. So now I'm a bit confused as he lives with his sister (both now 11 weeks) so I'd really like to have him 'done' asap if at all possible.

As soon as plums are showing.

~12 weeks on average i believe it is, but sooner is possible.

You need to separate him from his sister. Now.

I've had them done at 11, 12, 13 weeks before. It comes down to when your vet feels they are right for surgery though. Some say a particular age, some say a particular weight.

But what I have found is that the younger they are, the better and faster they bounce back.

Thanks guys, I've made an appointment with the vets this Friday for their first myxi jab and general health check so I'll have a chat with the vet then. I will seperate them now just in case :)
