  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Trying to eat but can't...

Hello.

Please send some spare vibes for Sophie my French Lop. She is our baby. :)

I rescued her in February and she is nearly two years old.

The last couple of days I have noticed that she is a bit quieter than usual but she has ran around like a crazy rabbut when outside and has been eating/drinking.

This morning I thought my husband fed her before work. She runs circles around you until you feed her. Anyway, when I changed her litter tray (later morning) I noticed that the poops were not as big as usual and there were not as many as usual. She had not touched her hay either. I decided to get a few pellets out to check she was eating - and the poor thing tried but spat it back out whole.

I rang my husband at work and he said he did not feed her. She didn't ask him for food either.

I have syringe fed her 10ml of critical care, 20ml of apple and pear baby food and 15ml of water. She keeps picking food up and trying to eat it but after one mouthful she gives up. She chews slowly for a very long time to eat the smallest amount.

I have managed to get an appointment at Wood vet Group but have to wait until 4:15pm. It was the only appintment left to see the rabbit specialist.

I am guessing that she has something wrong with her teeth, other than that I have no idea.

Please keep your fingers crossed.

Tanya

You need to get her straight to the vets Tanya. It sounds like she needs an urgent dental. If she stops eating, her gut could stop all together which could be fatal within hours.

Must admit I thought this..
4.15 is a bit of a late appointment should she need a dental, as it would need doing straight away

Is it possible for you to get an earlier appointment if you say it's urgent? Lots of vibes for her and well done for ringing the vets and getting her an appointment today xxx

I did tell them it was urgent but that was the only time they had available to see the rabbit expert.

She had laryngitis and a temperature of 108. Vet gave me meds and she still hadn't improved by the next day (Friday). I took her back to the vets and her temperature had gone down. He said her larynx had improved too but she went into stasis.

I rang the vets again today and they told me to continue with what I was doing.

She died with me this afternoon.

I feel so lost without her. She usually follows me around the house and jumps on the bed for cuddles and nose rubs.

RIP my baby girl.

I love you Sophie, my little Soppy Loppy. xxx xxx

I lost my boy Jack one monday to stasis, I got him from a rescue in February as well, so I know how you feel. Keep your chin up and remember the last few months of her life have been fab and full of love. Better to have died knowing your love and friendship then in a rescue.

Sorry to hear your news, binky free Sophie, go and find Jack and binky free together xxx
