  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

ivermectin dose for ear mites

amyp

Young Bun
Filthy has had a droopy ear now for almost a month. He has had oral antibiotics, ear drops, surgical cleaning of the lump/growth in his ear and an injection (ivermectin?). The vet says this is all he can do. His ear now looks scabby on the outside, suggesting mites, although it doesn't look like mites on the inside. The vet didn't know what the growth/lump deep in his ear could be. He is eating and drinking ok, but the last couple of days has felt a bit lighter. Is it possible that it is actually ear mites? I rarely see him scratching, but our other rabbit Topsy had ear mites a while back, and he had the same hair loss without the droopiness. He recovered completely after one injection of invermectin.
Vet is the best here (in Uganda) but it's quite clear that he thinks it's not worth the expense in treating him. Should I go back for another injection of ivermectin? Any alternative ideas?

We had somebody come to our vet with ear mites, she needed to get 3 injections two weeks apart. I think you normally need at least 2 to break the life cycle, as the eggs hatch at about 2 weeks and reinfest again.
