  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

A question for those with medical knowledge RE stasis

Am I right in thinking that prolonged stasis/food refusal in rabbits can cause problems with toxins/the liver?

Yes, as far as I know its the weight loss that causes the problems so if a rabbit isn;t eating long term due to stasis and starts to loose weight rapidly it can affect the liver. But the liver is also pretty good at regenerating once the situation is resolved too :)

From what Ive read (just very quickly) the stasis can lead to a build up in bacteria, which releases toxins. The liver is under strain and it can lead to fatty liver disease :)

I was in Holland and Barrat earlier today and spotted box of milk thistle capsules which can come in liquid form. When I asked the guy what they were used for he said that people used them to help the liver process toxins (or break down toxins, Ive already forgotten  ) I was wondering if, providing all ingredients are safe, it would be any good for bunnies

There are plenty of people on here who have used milk thistle for bunnies, but I haven't as yet.

I was thinking of hepatic lipidosis, not sure if that is what you were thinking of too?

thanks Jane, how/when/why do you use it?
