Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Rabbit stitches

Wise Old Thumper
Hey,
Not sure if you remember or not, but just over 10 days ago our rabbit had his toe amputated.

Everything is going well he went back to the vets 3 days after and the vet said he's doing fine etc. Last night he was running around doing binkies in the garden :D

However, we have just noticed that you can see one of the knots for his stitch, everything else looks fine, the wound looks clean etc... just dont want him to pull at the knot and break the wound open? (not even sure if he could do that!?)

Going to ring the vets tomorrow to make sure it's all okay, just wondering if anyone had any experience with this sort of thing, how long will the wound take to completely heal etc?

Thanks,

Gareth

Do you know what type of stitch they were. Sometimes they need removing after about 10 days or they may have used dissolveable ones that will take a few weeks to go.

After 10 days the wound should be well knitted so even if he removed the stitch it shouldn't break open at all - with non disolveable stitches they'd be taking them out at this stage anyway. I'd give your vet a call and double check they are dissolvable and if so it's probably fine to ignore it unless he's shown any signs of it bugging him.

I'm glad to here he's healed up well and is bouncing about as normal :)

Just got off the phone to the vet, they said that the nurse has to remove the stitch apparently. so am going to take him in this evening.

just dont like putting him in his carrier as he really doesn't like it

It all went well :D

The nurse just cut the stitch off as it was part of the internal stitching and will dissolve in a few months, but obviously the bit that was protruding needed to be removed. he's healing nicely :D
