  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How to clean a reluctant rabbit's bum

Pebblesetc

Buckley sampled some strawberry last night. It hasn't agreed with him and e has a bit of poop dried round his bum. He's too fast and wriggly to get hold of, how do I clean his bum?

Other than the poop he seems ok, eating hay, drinking. I just won't give him anymore strawberry x

If it's only a little bit then I would use a damp flannel to try and lift some of it off, and keep an eye on it.

I would avoid bathing him!

I have the worlds fiestiest rabbit at home and she is currently very poorly with what I suspect is GI Stasis.... for a couple of nights i have been keeping a check on her bottom as it keeps getting mucky. Once I have finally managed to catch her, i turn her onto her back as this puts rabbits into a daze and get somebody to help hold her while i clean her up. Hope this helps x

You could try an dry bottom bath, I do this with one of mine and you take off as much as you can then sprinkle on a bit of Cornstarch powder (not baby powder or anything containing talc), I use Burts Bees powder and it's really good, smells lovely too and won't hurt your bun. This is rubbed in gently and you'll find the poops just come away without pulling to hard to avoid hurting bunny bottom. Hope this helps
