Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bite wound - antibiotics or no antibiotics?

So I just noticed one of my rabbits has a bite wound on her chin, I'm guessing from another rabbit in a run next o her. Even though there's about an inch between them, it must have been that she stuck her chin through and got bitten.

It looks ok, healing well, not infected looking, scabbed over fine.

But do you guys think she needs antibiotics as a precaution? Or only if it gets infected or she seems unwell?

It'd be no problem for me to get anitbiotics for her, just don't want to give them unless she needs them. I'm going to keep a close eye on her of course, but any advice? Thanks :)

Personally I would want a Vet to take a look at it as bite wounds can easily abscessate. Just because it has scabbed over it does not mean that it has healed underneath and the scab could actually be closing in lots of necrotic tissue and bacteria.

The only way to reliably assess a wound is to examine it and I cant do that so I cant tell you if antibiotics may be required or not.

What Jane said. Personally I woukd also be looking at their runs if the can get to each other through the wire, perhaps block the bottom section off? I have blocked the first foot or so of the run off with plywood to stop agressive buns nipping at each other.
