Another vet question (sorry)!

Bitzy

I'm going to email a vet that's been recommended to me by the local RSPCA and I just wondered, what sorts of questions would you ask to suss out whether they were rabbit savvy or not?!? :)

ooh you'll get lots.

erm ask if they need to be fasted before an anaesthetic.

they don't because they can't be sick, good vet should know that.

others will know better q's though :)

How much experience does the vet have with bunnies?
And in what if any area do they have expertise?
If bunny was to be admitted for whatever, can they bring their own dry food and or hay.
If a bunny is bonded can they bring along their partner. Ideally this should be always be yes. There may of course be certain circumstances were they have to be parted, very rare though. A bond can be broken whilst they are apart.
Can bunny bring along any of it's own toys etc? Things to comfort them.
Depending on the duration of the stay, can you go and visit?
Do they ever hold any Rabbit Awareness Days?
Is there someone there 24 hours of the day?
Is there an out of hours contact number?
Do they do call outs?
If they don't have any leaflets regarding rabbit welfare, would they consider getting some and having them on display in a prominent site?
Can they personally recommend anyone to look after rabbits whilst their owners are on their holidays etc?

Just a few things for starters.

Good luck. :D

Do you treat a lot of Rabbits at your Practice? Including surgical procedures such as neutering and Dentals. (Desired answer 'Yes')

Do you advise that a Rabbit should be starved prior to a GA ? (Desired answer 'NO')
Do you think appropriate analgesia is of particular importance in Rabbits who are unwell/ injured/post surgery ? (Desired answer 'Yes')

Do you attend any CPD Courses specifically about Rabbits? (Desired answer 'Yes')

Do you recommend vaccination against Myxomatosis and VHD (Desired answer 'Yes')

If my Rabbit is Hospitalised what night cover care do you provide (Answer Vet always available, VN in attendance all night)

When Hospitalised will my Rabbit be kept in a separate environment to Dogs and Cats (Desired answer 'Yes')

If my Rabbit should present with a condition you are unfamiliar with would you willingly offer a referral to a Specialist ? (Desired answer 'Yes' )

I'd probably think of more as I grilled the poor sod, but thats a few suggestions to be going on with :D
