  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Smartie is the first of my rabbits going in the snip tomorrow, and I have no idea what to expect afterwards,

soo afew questions?

Will he have a head cone?
How long is recovery?
Best bedding?
Help with pain?
Is feeing as normal?
Things not to do?

Will he have a head cone? I can't imagine he would. None of mine ever have. I've never known any boy to have one.
How long is recovery? That depends rabbit to rabbit but its important to remember to ask and to make sure you bring home pain relief to administer at home. Some return to normal within a couple of hours, others take a bit longer
Best bedding? Something that doesn't shed. Sometimes fleecey blankets, sometimes vet bed. No sawdust or anything that could stick to his wounds and aggravate it
Help with pain? He will likely get pain relief on the day but you need to ensure before he goes in that you will have some to bring home
Is feeing as normal? Sorry, I don't understand what you're asking
Things not to do? Don't let him over exercise. Just a small space to help him recover is important

I have an article on my website about before, during and after a spay/neuter and it would be worthwhile having a read of that to give you more info.

You really do need to communicate with your vet about pain relief.
