  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Has anybody got other surgestions for a partial bowel blockage?

HoppingBinky

Mama Doe
I took Luck to the vet this morning as when i got home from work she didn't look well and her poos were tiny. The vet rang me in the afternoon after a blood test to say she had a partial bowel blockage. I'm so worried they have given her some painkiller a gut stimulant and some recovery food (syringed). I gave her some more recovery food before coming to work at 5pm and 7pm.She was hopping about the hutch like nothing was wrong after her painkillers etc.
I will pick up some pineapple juice after i finish at 7am. She has nommed a little bit of her normal food and some hay but just worried by size of poos. I will massage her tummy when i get home aswell. Can anyone else think of any more ideas i could try? I'm sat at work worried:(:(.

I don't have any advice but would like to offer moral support and get well soon vibes. My bunny Julie is in stasis and feeling poorly too.

Personally I would expect the Vet to prescribe ONGOING fluid therapy, both subcutaneous and oral. It is ESSENTIAL that an attempt is made to rehydrate the impaction.*Once any possibility of a Full Obstruction has been excluded* I would also expect the Vet to prescribe ONGOING prokinetics (gut motility stimulants) -Metoclopromide, Ranitidine/Domperidone, Lactulose (an osmotic laxative which draws fluid INTO the bowel) plus appropriate analgesia.

A GI impaction/partial obstruction requires aggressive and ongoing treatment, often for over a week. Fluid therapy is so, so important *even if the Rabbit is not clinically dehydrated*.

I hope that you Bun recovers xx

Thanks Jacks-Jane, the vet did say that if she was no better to take her back this morning. I have just got home though and she's done the biggest poo i ever did see. Should i take her back to get checked out or just carry on with the treatment? She seems alot brighter in herself and is now grooming herself and coming up for a fuss. I'm not sure it's cleared even though i'm hoping it has and i don't want to count my chickens before they hatch so to speak.

I would not ever force feed ant type of food even rabbit recovery as if it is a blockage your adding to the problem. If bun wants to eat fair enough thats good. We were advised by our vet as much pineapple as bun can drink (i know some disagree on here but it worked for us) so keep giving pineapple juice and if buns pooing then you know yourself it must be passing through fingers crossed!

I must admit the pure pineapple juice did work well with my other bun. But she has been eating hay and her normal food overnight. So fingers crossed. Thank you for all your help, i would be lost without you lot.:)
