  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spaying :)

I was just wondering if anyone has (or knows) if it's safe enough to have a 4 year old bunny spayed. I don't think she's old at all but my mom and dad do... Donny is only 3 months and our vets have said to wait until he was 6 months and he can be neutered so a long wait really

It's just Poppy I'm worried about because she has really bad teeth and jaw problems at the moment which we are sorting out. 3rd trip to the vets next monday.. Just want it sorted though :(

Do you think we'll have to wait a while after her teeth are sorted and she's chilled out before having her spayed?
I don't want to stress her out too much. It's bad enough trying to get her into the carrier because she knows where it takes her now lol..

If her Dental problems involve abscesses then I would not have her spayed at this stage.

I would discuss it with the Vet treating your Rabbit :)

Male rabbits can be neutered as soon as their testicles descend, this can be as early as 12 weeks but some vets like them to be a little bigger. For a male 4 months/16 weeks is a good age for neutering. The six month recommendation is usually for girls.

Spaying is good for females for health reasons but if you are doing it to bond it probably wouldn't work. A 4-6 month old unneutered male would pester a female even if she was spayed.
