  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

anyone been to FHB with ear abscess?

Sorry to keep going on about Parsley's ear abscess - and huge thanks to everyone that has replied to threads in past.

Having had wicks to no avail and managed to scratch last out of ear:roll: - last week the abscess started showing on exterior and so we (vets) were able to actually cut and drain from outside so to speak and he is now on duphapen and baytril and being flushed.

HOWEVER our vet is starting to mutter about quality of life . . and 'where is this leading' type of conversations . . as he is being brought into vets surgery daily for jabs (we have tried and failed to give penicillin at home) - Parsley is still just the same lively happy bunny as ever so we are very against any suggestion of pts.

I had vague feeling that maybe FHB was a bit of an abscess specialist and might be able to say some encouraging words if asked for referral opinion.

we also though of trying honey now it can drain through . .

also anyone know difference between duphapen and duphapen plus strep?

I have had two buns with ear abscess that FHB operated on with complete sucsess.
There is a photo of the op on another thread of mine about this.
My bunny Henry, is at FHB now awating an op on a tooth root abscess tomorrow, he had one on the other side of his jaw that is completly gone.
It is along way for me to travel, but I feel it is well worth it compared to the time wasted at other vets.
She is a great believer in penecilan injections though:( I have this struggle to look forward to when I get Henry home on Thursday:roll:

Good luck with your bun.
