Fatty's going through a change from a hen to a cockerel (happens to around 1 in 10,000 apparently) and was very ill last week, we thought we were going to lose her, so it was so nice to see her perked up today!

Lovely photos..... and I also learnt something new (I didn't know hens could change into cockerels ).

Buns are gorgeous, almost goes without saying!
So shiny :love::love:

But those hen pics are amazing!
We had chooks when I was a child on the farm.
I now look after the hens as part of my volunteer role & I still love them.
Glad Fatty is OK, had not heard of this happening before.
I will share this info with other hen enthusiasts at the shelter :)
Interesting but scary for you & not too flash for poor Fatty.
I wonder if her relationship will change with the rest of the flock when she has become a he?
Do report back!!

Lovely pics!:love: I've always wanted chickens

I have to also point out that we have the same container for our bunny foods xD

Well first she stopped laying eggs, then her comb and wattles grew a lot, then she started humping the other chickens (this has calmed down a bit now) and now she's trying to crow (she does all the right movements but no noise comes out) and is growing little spurs!
I really hope she doesn't start crowing because I just know our neighbours will get funny about it and I'd absolutely hate to have to rehome her.

Supposedly it happens when one ovary gets damaged. When the second one kicks in to action it can give them a surge of testosterone causing them to change gender! Will report back if there are any other changes. :)

Fascinating!
Do you have any idea how her ovary was damaged?
I will follow Fatty's story with interest. (I am such a geek:oops:)

We think it might have been when my 3 year old nephew caught her (he came proudly marching up the garden holding her, and couldn't give us an answer when asked how on earth he managed to catch a chicken) because I'm fairly sure she stopped laying eggs the day after that. Never thought to tell him not to pick up the chickens because I never thought he'd manage it.:(

Here's a pic

I feel awful in retrospect that I took a photo before asking him to put her down

I mean, it could have been something else but that seems a bit too coincidental.

Hard to know I guess for sure but yes I can see your concern.
He has quite a grip on her! At 3yrs old I was still pretty scared of hens
I'd help Mum feed them & they would stand on my feet.
I'd be in my jandals & I can still remember the feeling of their feet on my toes, I hated it.
At least it sounds like Fatty is on the mend all be it in a slightly different guise. :)
