Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Bordatella infection UD p7 - seems to be just an infection!

Can anyone give me some info/feedback etc.

Echo has been sneezing for a week - he is on Baytril, and has been since the start. He had a nose swab taken pre-antibiotic and it has tested positive for Bordetella bronchiseptica.
However, he only has discharge from one nostril and it appears clear, not cloudy, which made my vet think foreign body with a resultant infection.

She has spoken to John Chitty about Echo - and he believes there is an underlying issue as it is only presenting in one nostril, so would like to x-ray Echo for dental/sinus issues and also use a scope to look up his nasal passage.

Questions...
Has anyone used John Chitty before - and if so how was he?
Has anyone had a bunny present similar symptoms and it be a foreign body?

I just want some info etc, before I call John.

Echo is absolutely fine in himself despite the sneezing - running / binkying / eating like a pig!!

coco gets hay up his nose sometimes and iv been lucky enough that iv been able to remove them, he also is a snuffels bun and so has antibiotics intermittently, dora to has snuffles (on top of her other issues) though currently it has not returned thats not to say it wont. iv not heard of your vet but i think it he is doing everything such as cultures and x rays he is being thourough. which is a good thing x

I've not used him personally but I think John Chitty is an exotics specialist and I've read he's quite good. I'm sure there is someone on here who has used him.

Thank you Jane - this is brilliant information!
His C&S swab shows that it is only Bordetella in his nose, and that this particular strain is sensitive to Baytril, so hopefully the antibiotics will help, and JC can have a look up his nose to rule out a foreign body.

He says that they would not normally recommend such an invasive procedure so early, but Echo is only showing mucus from one nostril, and shows no other 'infection' symptoms (temp/appetite/activity etc).
Makes them think something underlying, rather than 'just' an infection.

Hi, yes I have used John Chitty and can recommend him, he is worth every penny, he's not cheap but then he is a specialist.

I have taken quite a few bunnies to see him and he has been brilliant with all of them, the one most like Echo is Andy, I took him to see John and he xray'd him under GA and diagnosed that he had Frontal Sinusitis and he operated there and then

Here is one of the xrays

And a photo where he drilled his nose

It made the world of difference to Andy and he has been so much better, he still gets bouts of snottiness but a course of antibiotics clears it up

Good luck

Spoken to my vet again this afternoon as Echo has only sneezed twice in 24hrs and his nose has dried up. He is also MUCH happier in hiself, he never lost his appetite, but was subdued and not as 'bouncy' as normal.

Our vet is happy with a continuation of his Baytril as the C&S test indicated the strain was sensitive to this antibiotic, and close monitoring for any changes. We will be giving him another week of the antibiotic, with a check up on Fri and Mon.

My OH has been in with the buns all day and Echo is back to his usual bouncing self!
I just want to be at home - why do we have to be at work all the time!
