Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Average costs of abscess?

Semicat

New Kit
Hi everyone. I was wondering about the average cost of abcess treatments. I live in the US but any answer helps.

My bun seems perfectly fine but the other day i noticed a bump in his mouth around the jaw. Today it seems to have dissapeared. Im going to take him to the vet but it would be nice to know what kind of numbers i may be looking at.

Thanks to all and any answers

hello  im in the Uk but heres my thread on my two rabbits who both have abcsess's http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?t=271033,

to keep it short it all depends on the indivdual circumstances and what is able to be done, my two are on ongoing treatment, casper cannot have GA due to his age and other issues but my poppy has had the full works so i will give her as an example, she had x-rays to check where the abcsess was, GA to remove abcsess and part of root which was infected, then lab fees to find the best treatment which came to around 300 pound and then cleaning and check ups for two weeks twice a week which was 30 pound each time so 120 pound and she will need to go back again if any changes or the hole closes, i flush her hole with a syringe twice a day (all that does not count medcine either) but thankfully poppy is insured! x

It is really impossible to say !! Each case will be unique in it's specific management.

If it is a tooth root abscess then surgery is likely to be required as well as laboratory testing of swabs taken from the abscess wall, skull radiographs to assess extent of infection, appropriate systemic medication...........

I would discuss costs with the Vet once you actually know what the problem is.
