  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Droopy ear

Young Bun
One of my rabbits developed an eye infection on Friday. He was no better on Saturday so we took him to the vet. He had a slight temperature and was listless but still eating a bit. I pointed out his droopy ear to the vet but he didn't really comment on that. Today he (the bun, Filthy) is much better, running round the garden and eating. His eyes have also cleared up tremendously with the eye drops. But his ear still droops. Could it be that it also has an infection? It looks pink and is warmer than usual to the touch.

Yes, an ear infection sounds to be very likely. He probably needs systemic antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. I would call the Vet today for advice as ear infections can become a serious problem. Good luck xx

Filthy's been given ear antibiotics and anti inflammatories as well as oral antibiotics. The vet saw what could be a growth or pus- filled blister in his ear-we're waiting to see if the treatment clears it up, if not he will try to lance it early next week. His eyes are much better though.

Droopy ear update

Well after a week of antibiotics and anti inflammatories we went back to the vet today. He tried to remove the growth/infection in his ear and flushed it out well, although he doesn't know what it is or sound too positive that it won't come back. But full marks to Filthy - he was the most co-operative patient ever, and only started struggling when he went back into his travelling box. What a good boy! Hope his model behaviour pays off and he makes a full recovery. Will post pics soon Yvette...

Until I am organised to post recent photos of him, Filthy is the snow white rabbit in my avatar.

no improvement with droopy ear

So far we've tried two weeks of oral antibiotics, three weeks of ear drops and three trips to the vet, including an attempt to surgically remove the infection/growth in Filthy's ear. His ear is still drooping.

I must explain that we live in Uganda and this is the only vet who has any experience with any small animals other than cats and dogs. He has tried, but now made it clear that the treatment he's given so far is everything that is available for a rabbit in this country.

Filthy seems ok but what if his ear doesn't improve/gets worse? He is eating well, running around in our garden as usual, and, amazingly, still tolerating my examinations and twice daily ear drops. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternative treatment? How long should I allow things to go on with no change? He has a male friend who offers grooming and company.
