Question about vaccination/neutering

Leximo

Young Bun
At the moment my little Buddy is 9 weeks old, and I'm starting to focus on when I will get him vaccinated and neutered. I was planning on getting him neutered when he is about 4 to 5 months old - is this alright? :? I don't want to get it done too early or too late, so thoughts on this would be appreciated

Also, about vaccinations - obviously I wouldn't plan on getting them both done at the same time, however what age would you say I should get his first vaccination? Sorry for all the questions, I want to make sure I get it all right :')

I think that he could be vaccinated now but would wait for someone more knowledgable to confirm that and check with your vet before booking the appt.

With regards to the neuter, you will have to wait until he has "dropped" so it probably could be 4-5 months, all bunnies are different.

Thanks for the help! I wasn't sure whether I could vaccinate now, but I suppose I better book the vaccination app. sooner rather than later. :)

Its 16 weeks for first vacs (says my vet) then a couple of weeks for VHD. When you register with a vet you can ask about it and they will advise.

Can you see his plums yet? ;) I think you can have it dont as soon as you can but some vets think its better to wait a bit longer say 6 months. If he is on his own I wouldnt worry too much about the timings.

If you are new to bunny keeping and need a vet recommending, start a thread in Rabbit Chat and name your area for any recommendations. Good bunny vets are not easy to come by.

I'll have a chat with my vet then about the vaccinations, I might end up waiting a couple of weeks anyway. :)

He's a bit wriggly at the moment and doesn't like being picked up, so unfortunately I haven't been able to check, however hopefully my vet will be able to tell me once I book an appointment :)

I've done a lot of searching and I made a thread not long ago asking for opinions on a veterinary hospital near me, and it had positive feedback from the people who went there with their buns :thumb: They also have a rabbit savvy vet so I think they will be good, however I'm still open to any other suggestions. :)

If he is 9 weeks old now, I would get him booked in for his vaccinations straight away. Myxo vaccine can be given from 6 weeks of age (link below is their official legal datasheet which says so) and as we are getting into myxo season, I would get this done first.

There are three different VHD vaccines, you only need one of them, but vets vary in which one they use.

Cylap (the oldest - many people don't like this one as it seems to give a greater number of reactions) can be given from 10 weeks http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Pfizer_Limited/Cylap/-44935.html

Lapinject, a newer one, can be given from 5 weeks! http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Pfizer_Limited/Cylap/-44935.html
Some vets don't use this one as it comes in a batch of 5 which have to all be used the same day, so it the vet doesn't use many vaccines, they might not keep this one in stock.

There is also a much newer one just out, which also suggests that it can be given as a single dose from 10 weeks http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/animalcare_limited/anivac_vhd/-53399.html

I would suggest getting him booked in for these vaccinations, as he will be old enough to have both of them now, and talk to your vet about when they would be happy to neuter. By the time he has his second vaccination your vet may be able to feel if he is nearly ready to be neutered :)

Thanks so much, that helped a lot!

I'm booking his myxi vaccination tomorrow, so hopefully he'll get it done within the next week or so.
