Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Stubborn corneal ulcers

Just wondered what treatment others have used for corneal ulcers? Timmy's aren't responding to treatment, and am looking for other ideas to discuss with the vet.

He's had the serum, I should have said what he's had.

He has tried Tiacil, Fucithalmic vet, lacri-lube, viscotears, serum drops (he's on the second lot now). He's had them debrided, and cultures have been sent away to check for infection or yeasts.

I'll print out the insulin page and take it with me on Monday, thanks.

 Bertie had tiacil drops....allsorts of drops...several courses of serum therapy....he never had it debrided or cultured.....it went on for about a year i think.....hes been left with scarring...and being a REW bunny its made him even worse for wear eyesight wise.

has your vet consulted with a specialist?

bertie had to go several times to andover to see john chitty.....he had a list of things..but luckily in time berties ulcer stopped being active.

i hope you get it sorted soon:wave:

ooh jane thats interesting..thank you.

When I had a corneal ulcer I had anti-biotics and steroids but not sure if anything is available like that for bunnies.

I guess it depends on the type of infection he has that is underlying to causing the ulcer x

It appears to be dry eye that is causing the problem.

Vet has been in touch with D1ck vet school for advice.

Right now Timmy has had enough with all the poking about and drops. He didn't do well at the vet when they took more blood today, and hasn't seemed his usual self tonight. He was getting so upset with everything earlier we decided to leave him be for the rest of the night.

Is there any possibility of using visco tears to prevent future ulcers?

Sending him lots of get well vibes xxx

He's using lacri-lube just now to keep his eye moist, and has had viscotears before.

I've given him a bit of a break from the treatment today, as he was struggling with drops almost every half hour, especially since one lot is sore for him. He was not eating his breakfast or hay this morning, but would still eat greens.

He has been outside playing, and seems much happier, and has been munching hay again. I feel totally evil though as he will need to come in shortly and go back on the drops again :(
