  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rearguard or Beaphar?

Dollie

I know this has been asked before, it appears to me as if Rearguard is better, but I'd like to know why.. (And if I got that wrong, why is the Beaphar Fly Strike better?)

I'm not a fan of using this kind of chemicals on rabbits but I'm afraid Fred won't get better so I don't really have any alternatives. (Other than doing nothing and hope he'll be okay, which isn't an alternative for me..)

I don't know why but Rear Guard is prescribed by vets so it must be the best option. You can only get it with a prescription.

Fly Guard is available off the shelf and I don't know of any vets prescribing it.

If you have a bun who might be at risk but the vet doesn't think it's using Rear Guard, it might be worth using Fly Guard. I've used Fly Guard before. The rabbits don't like it but they were all fine after they dried out.

Well, the thing is, I live in the Netherlands where you can't get Rearguard, not on prescription and not off the shelf. So that's probably why my vet hasn't thought about using Rearguard, big chance she doesn't even know it excists.. There's one webshop here that does sell Rearguard now though.

Rearguard lasts for 10 weeks before it needs reapplying. I don't know what Beaphar is but have a look at that as well :)

beapher is a fly gard and repellent it will not stop eggs hatching, rear gaurd is prescription only and stops any eggs hatching i always use rear gaurd but i have high risk buns (elderly and one with incontinance) so it depends on the risk catergary of your bunny and your opinions in my eyes rear gaurd is well worth the extra money x

Fred is incontinent too, that's why I'd like to use it. I think I'll just order Rearguard.
