Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Abscess

Charm

Young Bun
Just wanted to ask advice. My little dutch rabbit Minnie has been a bit unwell for the past few weeks. Not affecting her eating or habits seemingly normal. But when eating was making a funny noise. Thought it was just a cold so left it. But today I noticed one of her cheeks was ever so slightly swollen. Took her straight to the vet and she diagnosed an abscess. She even left me feel it. Just at the back of the jaw. About the size of a 1p. She gave her an injection and now I have to give o.5mls onday daily for 6 days. But the vet said sometimes the abscess can be on the bone???? Then said she may need tooth treatment? Anyway I left with the antibiotics. Anybody been through this kind of thing with their buns and what was the outcome?

Yes, lots of us have unfortunately. :(

It will be hard work but buns can recover fully. What antibiotic have you been given? I imagine it's baytril but I also think that this won't help if it is. Especially if it's in the bone. You might need an x-ray taken and you might need a stronger antibiotic like depocillin. This HAS to be injected and when Grim had his abscesses I was taught how to inject him and did it at home.

Please don't be afraid to go to another vet for a second opinion if you're not happy. Most vets will give a bad outcome for bone abscesses. I was advised to have Grim put to sleep. Two years later and he's still here. So ask as many questions as you can, get your vet to ring other more specialised vets or go and see them yourself. :)

My Kiki has an abscess on her nasal bone and has lived with it for over 3 years. She had an injectable penicillin for a year after Baytril was less than useless. Since then we have found a combination of oral antibiotics which keep it under control (Rilexine and Flagyl) plus Bisolvyn for when she's snotty. I have to keep an eye on her bum in case such strong antibiotics upset her guts but, touch wood, she's not had a problem there.

Just giving this as an example of how it can be mananged.

Good luck and keep us posted

Hello

Im so sorry to hear your bun has a abscess.. iv had a awful time recently too as my bun who is nearly nine is a dental bun and about a month ago he also formed a abcess, but due to his age and various of issues he has including snuffles she was unable to operate, then a few weeks ago his abcess burst so we have been flushing all the nasty stuff out and he is finely feeling a bit better, although my bun is terminally ill now as it had affected his bone :( he will never get rid of this now but we keep him happy and pain free with regualer trips to the vets and metacam, he is a very happy boy and you wouldnt know anything was wrong.

Then a week ago my other rabbit poppy got a abscess too :( just shear bad luck :( fortunatly she is younger and healthy and my vet did x - rays and found is was her root infected, she put her under GA and took out the abcess and part of the root and sent it to a outside lab to see if any anti biotics would help poppy. The results came back and her abscess was just normal bacteria so she does not need any anti biotics, but there is a chance she may get her abscess back.. as once they have abscess's they can return. But at the moment mine are stable. they have been going twice a week to the vets for a clean of there abscess's and my vet is happy to let them both holes close up now and see how we go, but once the abcess forms again we have to open them up and flush.

Here is my thread:

http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?t=271033

shows all the ups and downs we have had other the past few months and pictures of there holes in the side of there mouths, its a bit daunting at first but i dont really notic it anymore (pics on post 291) :) hope this helps, feel free to contact me but i know alot of people have buns with abscess's :( unfortuantly its so common because of there teeth.. xx

Thanks for all your replies and help. Well I tried to give her 0.5ml of baytril this morning but it was very difficult she just did not want it. I more or less got it on the fur beside her mouth and she immediately brought her paws up and licked it off. I suppose she got some of it. Apart from that she seems healthy enough and ate her pellets. Just have to see how she goes over the next few days.
