  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore ears - Mites ?

I have picked up the contis today and as i knew the females ears are very sore. There is brown in them and they both have blood in them (i guess from her scratching). The fur behind her ears on her neck is missing too ( i am wondering from scratching). She does kee turning her head to the side and shaking her ears

She is booked in for the vets sunday morning for this reason and for a health check and injections but i wondered if there is anything i can do to help her in the meantime? The previous owner said to put a couple drops of olive or veg oil in them. Should i ???

A couple of photos of the soreness :

:( Yeah, looks like ear mites. You could try oil. It can't hurt anything but it won't get rid of the mites. Might make them bite less for now though? My dog had ear mites once and we used oil until we got meds for it. It helped with the itching I think.

Thank you i will continue with the oil and then hopefully the vet can give me something to get rid of the mites on Sunday morning. Looks so sore :(

I wouldn't put oil in them until you've seen the vet. My Willow has just seen the vets for the same problem and been given a course of Xeno, and back to see him in four weeks. I'd just be wary of putting anything down there when they're sore before I'd spoken to the vet. Hope she feels better soon.
