You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

White discharge like substance?

Morning everyone! I have awoke this morning to find that Jessica has left some kind of white chalky like substance in her cage - presumably passed with urine? She was spayed on Monday but is much better in herself now an appeared to be completely back to normal until this? She is still on a course o antibiotics... Any ideas?? Xx

likely to be calcium as bunnies do not metabolise it properly and pass it in their urine that dries into a chalky substance.

As long as it is liquid, not sludgey, yellowy white/ creamy and thick or anything like a toothpaste consistency then it's perfectly normal.

It could also be the result of being on antibiotics as is perfectly normal also.

Antibiotics can also turn bunny urine bright red!

keep an eye on it and it should cycle round back to normal in a few days to a week or so.

:)

Thanks monocle! It was on some news paper- all dried up so I'm sure u r right! I will keep an eye on it just on case it changes! So difficult not to worry after this past week as she really was close to giving up at one point! Thanks again x

I completely understand! Morgs's spay surgery was a complete and utter nightmare- or rather the 4 weeks afterwards were.

I noticed her urine being all chalky 3 days after initially getting her and worried myself to death!

Hope you feel a little more chilled about it :) xxxx

You might also want to cut back on high calcium foods such as parsley (especially the curly variety) and dandelions just before it gets worse. There is a list of calcium rich foods somewhere but I can't find it.

Thanks for the advice!!It all makes perfect sense as we had been feeding her alot of dandelions and parsley after the op as she refused absolutely everything else! Back to normal food now so hopefully all is well! :)
