  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Metacam dose?

bunny babe

Wise Old Thumper
2 "units" per day - is that enough for a 3.7kg rabbit once a day

or

2ml from the old type syringe

This is based on the cat metacam? It seems low compared to what other people are giving :?

Im not sure what kind of metacam I had but for my Sebastian (1.5kg) he was on 6 'units' per day, this was upped from about 3 or 4 units

Dog and cat metacam are very different.
Grim usually has the dog one and has 7ml. He's 3.2kg so it's over twice the dosage stated for dogs.

I think the cat one might be stronger.

It's not - the cat metacam is weaker than the dog one. The dog one is 1.5mg/ml and I think the cat one is 0.5mg/ml. It's definitely weaker though. Parsnip is on a daily maintenance dose of metacam for his elbow joint and he has 0.3ml (dog metacam) twice a day. He weighs 2.8kg.

blimey thats over 3mg/kg  he must have loads of pain

my understanding of metacam is limited but i never realised rabbits could have such a high dosage

Alvin gets 0.6ml of the dog one for his tummy ache which i think is approx 0.4mg/kg (hes about 2.2kg) if hes really poorly i am allowed to give this dose twice a day but ive never needed to thankfully :D
