  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My bunny wont eat his hay!!!

Semicat

New Kit
His poops have become smaller and there are a lot fewer. He seems to also have stopped drinking his water. he does eat his veggies, fruits, pellets, and any other treats tho. I actually took him to the vet yesterday and from an exam she didnt see anything wrong. She then prescribed him with critical care, matacam, and cholestyramine.

Today i noticed he wasnt drinking his water any more. His poop did slightly pick up tho. Im so worried.. Any advice?

You can do this steps. I hope this helps.

* go back to your vet and make the vet check orally your bunny for spurs emerging on its teeth or gums. You can ask your vet to file it for you.

* decrease the amount of your pellets

* Try using botanical hay. Stick on the brand that they love.

* Choose Timothy Hay Cubes. This is tasty and will require both back and front teeth when nibbling.

I hope this will be good a advice.

It sounds like your bun is in Ileus and heading into GI stasis to me. The causes for this can be numerous but most commonly are down to a source of pain somewhere, stress is and can also be a predominant factor.

I would recommend that you take your bunny back to your vet asap first thing this morning and have him rexamined carefully. Did the vet look carefully at his teeth both front and back using an otoscope? It sounds like she has prescribed the right things but not eating hay is often a sign of dental disease or dental pain. The lack of fibre will be slowing the GI tract. In the meantime have you tried some fibrous plant materials as an alternative? Fresh grass, dandelions, bramble leaves and other dried/fresh bunny safe weeds/herbs might stimulate his appetite.

Thank you guys for the information.. Im.giving him another day because he seems.to be showing interest in his hay again but not completly eating it.

The vet checked his teeth with an otoscope but didnt notice anything. She listend to his stomache and heart and said nothing seemed wrong but the only way to know for sure shed have to do exrays and other thing, but she wanted to try what she prescribed.

Thank you guys again ill talk to the vet and discuss the GI stasis and the dental subject also
