FAO anyone who has experianced root tooth abcess's

beccimarie

Mama Doe
following my thread http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?t=271033.

Poppy now we "think" has a rooth tooth abcess near her eye as she has a small lump on her upper jaw level with the eye. She would not let the vet have a proper look in her mouth, the vet said she could not see a problem, she cannot tell, she checked her tear ducts and they are fine. My vet suggested we just keep an eye on her and if it gets an bigger or she is in discomfort from it which she isnt at the moment, than we will have her in for GA and have a look but she said because it is a root tooth and its near the eye its risky.

I just wanted to know your indivdual experiance with a root tooth abcess? I just want to help her and feel so helpless.. my other bunny is not terminally ill from his abcess and hasnt got much time left  i cant loose my poppy too

Grim had two. I'll explain as best I can what we found / did.

His front teeth started to grow really funny. After getting trimmed once my vet and I agreed on removing them. He stopped eating before the operation and when it was done they found two abscesses in the root canal and jaw. The vet who did it phoned me up and suggested I have him put to sleep. I said no, I wanted to try and treat it and never saw him again. I saw another vet who first put him on baytril while we tried to find something else. I researched all sorts including antibiotic beads. After a few weeks the baytril was doing nothing (unsurprisingly). I'd been to see a few vets in this time who didn't do much other than be surprised that he was still eating. The white 'pus' was coming out from where his incisors had been. It wasn't pleasant. My vet spoke to a specialist in Scotland and discussed the options and was told that depocillin injections would be the best way forward. It's hard to use the antibiotic beads in the root canals as they are an odd shape and if a little gap is left the infection could fester. He went under general anaesthetic to have all the infection cleaned out as best as she could. It was in his bone as well so I'm not sure if she took any of his jaw away. After that he was started on depocillin injections every three days for eight weeks. He had 0.6ml.

And it cleared up completely. He has many other problems but this was one that was sorted completely and could have been fatal. I have never seen that vet that wanted to put him to sleep since.

I honestly did not realise before casper and poppy abcess's could be such a issue, my other buns have never had dental issues, and i used to think it could be sorted straight forwardly but i see now its a little more then cleaning out puss :(, i think my vet is worried as its in-line with her eye.. so taking out bone near her eye would be risky.. i suspect this is what she meant, although she said she will have her in for GA if the lump gets bigger or she shows any signs of discomfort. She also said about antibiotics beads and how she doesnt think it would be a good idea.
i will mention depocillin, if she goes under GA and she finds it is a TRA, gives us more hope :) xx

Yep, you'll definitely need an x-ray. But I swear by depocillin at the moment. It seems to sort all his problems.

I guess if your vets wants to talk to someone about it I could give you the phone number of my vet and my vet's name. I don't think she'd mind. She's treated Grim with his abscesses, Dexter, my sister's bun with the same thing but just on one jaw and another rabbit. We all believe they are related, although there's no proof.

wow thank you :) my vet has told me to keep a eye on her and if it gets bigger or she is in discomfort then we wil take action, i sort of wanted to just say lets do it now, but then i would feel absolutly terrible if it was my choice and she didnt make it through GA. Its very difficult because poppy is not the easiest of buns, she launches herself at my vet  and bites her, so its almost impossible to look in her mouth without m vet being injured  but she is fine with me, she just hates strangers, although if it does come to having injection every 3 days, i think i will have to go up the vets and let them do it with me holding as i think it would be dangerous on my own. I did antibiotic injections with casper for his snuffles but he is much better at being handled.

Is she healthy other than that? Otherwise I would be inclined to have the x-ray done now. The longer you leave it the more of the bone it could damage if it is an abscess.

she is heathly never had any issues, i was thinking this.. i dont want her to get ill if you know what i mean. i am seeing my vet monday for my other bun, i will then speak to her about poppy too, and get her x rayed, we may even find out its not a abcess.. which would be brill! Do they have to be under GA for a x ray? .. i spose they do dont they :( im very worried about GA as the storys iv heard of completely healthy buns, passing away under GA, and id feel awful if she was healthy and then passed away due to GA :( she has been spayed.. and that was bad enough.

I know how you feel. :(
They don't have to be under GA for an x-ray but they do have to stay still. Perhaps sedation is a better option?
But as far as I know if a rabbit passes under GA it means there is an underlying problem like a bad heart or something else which was previously undetected. At the end of the day it's your call. Go with your gut. :)

i think a sedation in poppys case would be good  but thats good news if she can do it that way.. id feel alot better. I know i read too much  but rex's are prone to heart issues.. which worrys me  but obviously if there is a abcess there i know i have to do whats best for her.. its not fair she lives with a abcess at such a young age (4) which is young for me, casper is 9 this year.
