Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Eye problems

I have a new foster rabbit who has a problem with his eyes. He was checked at the vet because he often has his eyes closed or half open. The vet checked him over and put some dye in his eyes, which then showed a line in each eye. The vet rinsed each eye to see if the dye would wash off, she said that would mean it was an old scar.

Both eyes were still showing a mark after being rinsed. She thought that it was possibly an ulcer in both eyes, and has given me some Tiacil drops for him, and he is to take Meloxidyl every day. He goes back in a week for another check, to see if anything has improved.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be? I can see a faint grey area on one of the eyes today.

Is there any inflammation of the blood vessels in the iris ?

Did the Vet check drainage of the nasolacrimal ducts ?

Was 'dry eye' mentioned by the Vet ?

Aswell as the Tiacil you could ask the Vet about using some viscotears to keep the eyes lubricated.

Hope the poor Bun feels better soon xx

No inflammation to be seen. I could see a slight greyness yesterday in one eye, but not sure if that was still the dye.

There seems something wrong with both corneas for the dye to show up marks. She did wonder if it was his eyelashes growing inwards and damaging the eye.

He seems very slightly better with the drops, but the benefit was so quick I feel it was more that his eyes were having something moist on them, rather than the actual drops.
