Bright Red Urine/Blood?

helgalush

Wise Old Thumper
There is some bright red urine in the litter tray that looks like blood. Muesli has got kidney problems and his urine is often brown or orange, but this is the first time it has looked like this.

What does it mean? :(

Have they had anything different in their diet?

It can be quite common for some foods to give a bunny red wee just because of what's in it.

Any dandelion leaves? or even pro fibre pellets? fresh grass?

If it genuinely is blood then he will need a vet check, tonight. However, it may not be.

Actually just remembered that they have all been getting small amounts of green oat hay to help with their tummies. But Im not sure how that could cause bright red urine? Honestly it looks like fresh dark blood.

OH has just rung vets as they are open til 8. As he is eating and not in any obvious signs of pain and happy in himself (nudging Starbuck out the way to get more food, running over to us etc) they have advised us to just keep a close eye on him overnight, and if anymore overnight to take him down to vets tomorrow. :(

They do also have little sprinklings of "salad feast" which contains little bits of beetroot - which obviously would account for the redness - but they have been eating little bits of this regularly and we have never seen this before.

Have you cleaned up the wee?
I've never actually tried this myself but if you dip a tissue into the wee and let it dry, blood would dry brown/red whereas just wee should dry kinda orangy/yellow. Worth giving it a go I suppose.

I hope he will be ok :(

I'm afraid we have cleaned it up yes but I wouldnt have been able to do the test as he had done it on his puppy pad which is absorbent and draws the liquid in. It looked dry - and was still red. :(

Oh sorry Helen! We are not having much luck with our buns this week are we? I hope it's nothing sinister, I would have thought if it was blood there would be some other symptoms as well (but I am no expert). Hope Muesli is ok! xx

Dark red blood may be a cause for worry :(
My Nyxie had medium-red urine when it was chilly in the winter, and I believe they can have red or orange urine if it is cold.
But dark red? I would have them pee on something you can check to see if it is blood...but really I think the best course of action would be to bring a sample to your vet, at least 1/2 a tablespoon and uncontaminated by poo or anything.

Anyone know how serious bloody pee could be?

my bun has had very dark red urine before which looked like blood, try looking up any foods you've been giving him, as if they contain beta carotene it can turn urine red.

are there any clotted bits or streaky 'bloody' bits in the urine?

maybe try taking a sample to your vet if you're still unsure xxxxx

Thanks for the info.

No I couldnt see any streaky or clotted bits and there hasnt been any more since. It could just be a one-off - I hope so.

As I say there is some beetroot in the treat we give them (tiny bits) but I havent noticed it like that before today - orange or brown sometimes but not bright/dark red.

If there is any more I will take him to the vets.
Thanks.

From what I have *read* - ie this is second hand information only, I've not had experience of it myself - blood in the urine usually shows as normal coloured urine with blood patches/streaks visible separately within it. Urine that is a uniform red colour is just dyed urine.

However obviously take him to the vet if you're at all worried just for peace of mind :) I hope he's ok.

Thank you - that makes me feel a lot better. Everything is coming through clear now  so maybe it was that he just had an extra bit of beetroot or something

When my OH spoke to the vets they said the referral to Bristol for his kidney problems has been received and they want to see all his x-rays and test results etc so he is being looked in to further. Its just alarming to see bright red stuff in the litter tray.

Thanks. He's fine in himself, same cheeky Muesli, and there is no more red stuff. The vet is aware and we are hoping to hear from her tomorrow about the specialist referral - we will mention it to them if we take him down. Thanks.

Glad to hear that things are ok! Hopefully his referral will come through soon and they are able to help Muesli with his problems! Thinking about you xx
