  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Teeth advice please

Okay I've had another look at Theos teeth and I'll try to explain what they look like.

The bottom incisors - one of the teeth is sort of half way over the other tooth, they are not side by side

The top incisors are behind the bottom incisors (ie. they don't meet) and one of the teeth has a large piece missing sort of diagonally so there is only half the surface of the bottom edge of the tooth to what there should be.

Hope I'm making sense

I assume they will be a problem. As they're not meeting they will grow forever with nothing to grind them down. How old is he? If he's young it could be genetic. Vets can trim them if they get too long, but if they're growing too fast they may have to be removed (usually not a problem for the rabbit). If he's an older bun it could be a sign of abscesses underneath.

For now I would watch what he's eating closely. If he goes off veg like carrot or broccoli it might be because he can't bite them. If he goes off his food at all I would rush to the vets. I would also check his teeth on a weekly basis and if they look like they're touching the top or bottom of his mouth, if you see any sores then again go to the vet.

If you don't already have a vet who's really good with rabbits I would start asking around for one now and get registered. Usually I find it's best to ring your local vet and ask if they have anyone who specialises in rabbit or know any other vets that do.

He is only around 6 months and a foster. Possibly genetic as I think his parents are brother and sister!!
