  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Please, please, help! I think my new foster bun might be blind.

I have had a feeling that Oliver is blind for a couple of days. If you move your hand quickly towards him, flick it at his eyes or make a grabbing move he doesn't flinch or move away.

Today I was giving him meds in a syringe. I put banana on the end of the syringe and let him lick it off a few times. When I moved the syringe he couldn't find it quickly and looked like he had to sniff it out.:(

I am going to the vet tonight with him to have his op site checked from his neuter, one side looks a bit swollen, so will ask them to have a look at his eyes. Any experience of blind bunnies would be appreciated and ideas how I can help him cope if it is the case his sight his poor. Thanks

Sorry I have no experience on this at all but didn't want to leave you with no replies and maybe some one else can help you  Have you spoken to the rescue or wherever you are fostering him from and asked them about your concerns? x

HI
Poor bun :( Is he getting around ok? Bumping into things alot? Acting unusual in any ither way?
Dont worry too much if he is blind hun, plenty of blind buns adapt extremely well and live a normal life. Does he have a bonded partner? Sometimes this can help with their confidence as they follow the other bun
The worry is if this came on really suddenly, and if so what caused it :? But if he is ok in himself, eating well etc I would just take it a day at a time and see how he goes

Bailey has this. His eyes are fine and respond to light etc. Vet thinks its more to do with the signal not getting from his eyes to his brain. It doesn't cause him any probs, he uses his nose a lot to sense things. I always make a point of talking as I approach as when a baby he used to startle very easily and would sometime scream in fright. As he's got older though its almost like his other senses smell/sound have heightened as he doesn't seem to startle as easily now.
