Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Eyelid too big?

Loula

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has any clues or ideas as to what to do with Bella's eye.

Since we've had her (nearly 3 years), she's had problems with one eye, however it's beginning to look more sore than usual. We'll be off to the vet this week about it but was hoping someone might have some suggestions. It doesn't appear to be bothering her too much, she doesn't scratch at it, but I do sometimes notice that she keeps it shut more than the other one.

The best way I can describe it, is that her eyelid looks too big for her head/eye. The lids seem to 'overhang' one another. She has had a weepy eye since we've had her. She's been on numerous eyedrops, antibiotics, had her tear ducts flushed, and a skull x-ray. I bathe it regularly with cooled boiled water and dab some vasaline around the fur to try to stop the skin getting irritated. I'm now at a bit of a loss as to what to do. I don't think it's anything from her surroundings that is irritated it.

I've tried to get a couple of pictures, however she's an awkward bum and closed her eyes every time I tried to get close!

I was going to suggest the same as Jane, as it's hard to see that corner part of her eyelid and whether it is causing an issue. I have had a bun with it operated on and it corrected the problem, but I would have thought your vet would have diagnosed this if it were the case (I believe it's much more common in dogs, for example so a vet would likely have seen the issue before). :?

I would have guessed at entropian too, but as Gertie said I would have thought it would be easy to diagnose, although there is obviously the complication of inflammation and infection. As this has been going on so long I would ask your vet to refer you to an eye specialist for a second opinion, if possible xx
