  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

metaclopramide

When Floppy was ill I was given metaclopramide as an injection for him. He's an easy bun, so the jag wasn't a problem, but is this the only way to give it, or can they get a liquid form?

If there is a liquid form, was there any benefit for Floppy to get the injection?

A poorly bunny is less likely to be eating so you may have had problems getting it into them in the first place. If injected it will work alot faster than waiting for digestion.

Would have been given by syringing into the mouth, so him not eating wouldn't have been a problem. Although I wasn't sure if an empty tummy would affect absorbtion?

I'm pretty sure injections work more quickly, also with syringing sometimes some is wasted. An injection makes sure the right amount goes in when it's most needed.

Zantac is a syrup which is given orally. This does however work on a different part of the gut which is why it is often given ALONG side Metaclopramide as the two of them work wel together as it covers the whole gut.
As far as I know metaclopramide can not be given orally. Injecting it is much more effective way of getting it in to them.

Metoclopromide can be given orally but if the Rabbit is in full GI stasis ANY meds given orally are less likely to be effective than those given by injection.
