  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

administering metacam

my vet has told me to give eric a low dose (1unit) of metacam each day for a week as it seems he's uncomfortable and therefore not eating properly. he is, however, grooming way too much for my liking:?

anyhoo, i last gave him metacam about 8pm last night but he seems to be lying pretty flat again now and reluctant to move. is it too early to give him tonight's dose?

I would think it's ok as I've read on here that higher doses than the normal can be given short-term anyway (under vet advice that is!).

I don't think a couple of hours would make too much of a difference.. how much are you giving him?

Twinkle is on 0.6mls at the moment twice a day as she has just had a dental.. I will slowly wean her off it over the week.

Artie has two drops per kg of his body weight per day (ie 6 drops). I don't know how much Eric weighs but it sounds like less than half the dose Artie's on so based on that i'd say you're okay to give him his dose earlier.

Sending vibes and noserubs to him.

You can also try splitting the dose, half in the morning, half in the evening. This can sometimes be more effective.

Hope he likes what will shortly be arriving for him in the post. x

the syringe is tiny. its cat metacam and rather than being marked in ml, its marked in kg of weight.

after his dental he had 2 units (ie 2kg) but now i'm to give him 1 unit per day.

he weighs approx 1.6/7kg
