Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Blowfly Strike

Young Bun
Hi All

Now that the Spring and hot months are approaching, I would like to know what is the main risk for the above? Is it just the Bluebottle or the genus flies in general including houseflies? My vet has also told me that the flies whichever they may be will not lay in non-faecal matter such as urine stains on the bum, which doesn't sound quite right to me. Can anyone confirm?

Thanks

Hi

Fly strike is where the fly lays eggs in the bunnies fur. It can be on the back or round the bum (in fact anywhere). It less likely but not impossible that a bunny will get fly strike if they are kept clean (smelly buns attract flies).

I think it is mainly blow flies and blue bottles that lay in animal fur.
