Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Snuffle Bun :(

My boys snuffles have returned again. He had them when we first got him so he had a course of baytrill and it cleared up, then he got neutred but where it knocked his immune system and he may not have been completely healthy they came back so he had another course of baytrill and it went.

Now he has the sneezes and a small amoutn of discharge has started again

He's booked into the vets for Friday morning.

Just wondering what are the best treatments etc so I can go in armed with some knowledge and research. Also, how long would a course of subcut ABX be for a bun as we struggle with oral meds..BIGTIME! He is a very timid bun and cuddles and things are on his terms and when he doesn't want attention he gets really stressed.

I'll be taking both the buns to the vets as don't want to split them up unneccessarily for a period of time, he may enjoy a morning out

Help!

Thanks girls and guys!

Is there anything immediately I can do for him? He is still eating and drinking well, and pooping like a trooper :)

I swear by depocillin injections. I've used them with Grim for jaw abscesses, really bad eye infections and he is now recovering from a nasal infection. I was taught how to inject him by the vets and give him one injection at home every three days. He was on them for about two or three weeks this time.

If you struggle with oral medicines have you tried giving them on a little bit of bread?

Good luck.

you will need something stronger than baytril. especially one week courses at a time. this happened with my two. it will look like it works, but the infection will just be building up deep in the nose. it takes a long time to clear it from there. my vet wouldn't use baytril himself, but starts with a minimum 3 month course of penicillin injections at the first signs. it will take this long to reach the spores of the nose, making sure everything is eradicated. otherwise it will come back time and time again. it happened to my two and was left too late to fully get rid of. we went through a hell of a time. so asap get a rabbit vet treating them.

make sure your vet is a rabbit vet. this is the most important thing. and then see what way they do things.

The best advice would be to ask your vet about a culture and sensitivity test. This is the only way to know exactly what is causing the infection (its not always pastrella) and should hopefully help identify which antibiotic would work best. We couldn't do a c&s test with Bluebell because he has no real discharge and as a result its been a big guessing game going through various antibiotics. After trying lots of different ones we've gone back to the baytril only administering it differently (now via a neb instead of orally) and have had a great improvement with it so its unfair to say Baytril wont work.

Reading here, I'm so confused. I've got my rabbit Rocky on Baytril, he's halfway through a 10 day course with snuffles. :( But I just have no idea whether this will work or not? I feel helpless and just want to make him better.

Snuffles can never be cured, only brought under control each time. Most rabbits carry the bacteria, or have been intorduced to it but some buns can't fight it off themselves.

When I have used baytril in the past it has bought 'what i can see' under control so sneezes and snot, but not sure if it's helping on the inside, so in his nose and lungs.

This will be the third exacerbation for my bun and he is only 7 months old.

Please try not to worry. I think Baytril has had some bad press on here at times. Yes, often it isn't strong enough, but it does sometimes. A C&S test would be able to help work out which drug would work best but this would need to be done when the bun isn't on any meds.

Quite often the infections will flare up periodically over the rabbits lifetime. The best you can do is treat it as and when required. For several years Bluebell has only really had about one flare up a year and 4-6 weeks of Baytril normally sorted it, its only the last few months that we've had a real problem with it.

You may find that a 10 day course isn't really long enough. Treatment should be continued for a while even after the symptoms have gone, just to make sure everything is ok.

Not long until the vets now. He's still well in himself, binkying around and eating hay like a horse, no snot this morning which I will take as a good sign.

General consenus is a longer course then just 10 days, but debate to drug of choice

Will update later

Good luck. If you are having a lot of prob with discharge you could ask you vet about biosolven. Its a powder to sprinkle on food to help thin the mucus.

Right then.

Took smudge to the vet, and snoopy came along for the ride  She is a small animal specialist which I found out today which is good (she's the vet I like having).

She gave him a full examiniation, and even stuck a thermometer up his tiny bum. He jumped straight into my arms twice off the table

The plan is:

She has ordered ABX called engomycin but they won't be there til Monday so on monday she is going to give the first dose and show me injection technique, she said she was happy for me to do this at home as I am a hoomin nurse.

For the mean time she has said use 0.5ml of baytril and she has given me some bisolvin powder to help loosen up the secretions, twice daily.

I asked her if she felt that he was underweight, and she felt his ribs and she said he isn't as plump as he should be but he's not too bad considering he's unwell.

She is happy that he is still eating and drinking because if it had got to the point where he wasn't eating and drinking then PTS would have been option (covered buns ears at this point )

At this point becuase he is well in himself hopefully we can just manage the exacerbations of the disease.

Went well. OH settled him down and he curled up in a nice little ball on the sofa for me to jab him. He flinched a little bit but not too much.

Give him some basil and then he hopped off then. He's not too upset with me.
