View Full Version : Discospondylitis Help Please

Millie has just been diagnosed with discospondylitis and I would like some advice.

Millie's age is unknown but we guess about 7 years old if not older. She is mobile but her hind left leg has stopped doing very much over the past few weeks (both hind legs have been weak since we got her about a year ago).

Over the past few months she has had various occasions of been extremely wet but antibiotics have cleared this up. There effect seems now to be limited.

Is there anything I can (exercises ect) to help with the deterioration.

I was going to try and bond her and her female friend into another group so they could be free from their hutch 24 hours a day. Should I abort this?
They have met on several occasions and Millie has been the one to take control.

Any advice welcome.

Is she on any daily pain relief?

Sorry, yes she has metacam every day.

That's good :)

I wouldnt think that the bonding needs to be stopped. If anything i would say it may help her as she will be a bit more mobile and this could help her.

I have read a few people on her using glucosamine, that could help make the joints a bit more flexible.

What about different abx for the wetness? Sometimes a resistance can build up to a particular abx, but a different one could help?

I think she has been on 2 or 3 different abx. Can not remember which ones off the top of my head.

I will look into the glucosamine and think about continuing with bonding.

Thank you!

Poor Millie.

I seem to pop up on every thread saying this - but it is because I saw how much it helped my rabbit :) - but you could consider acupuncture. I think spondylitis is one of the conditions that can be treated with acupuncture. Typically it costs around 30 a session but if Millie's insured, the insurers may cover it. You can find a vet that offers acupuncture here: www.abva.co.uk.

(My rabbit had spondylosis in his neck, for which he had steroids and around 8-9 acupuncture treatments.)
