Indoor or outdoor?

Bunni_xx

Mama Doe
Why do you keep your buns indoors/outdoors? Just interested. Mine are outside because my mum said they stink the house out

I keep mine indoors because I haven't got a big enough garden for them, they have more space inside than what they would get outside :)

Realised I completely mis-read the question :oops::roll:

I much prefer Ogs inside :) he has alot more attention than he would if he were outside. Just love having him in really, don't think I could have a bunny outside now

He also hates it outside, so I don't have much choice in the matter

Indoors...

More room
Lots of foxes outdoors as we live near fields
Interaction
Don't have to go out in the cold to see them
No smell at all from them :?

Mine are outdoors. My house is tiny (2 up 2 down). So unlike other people, they have far more space in the garden than they would in my house! They're all locked up and *touch wood* we have no fox or cat problems here.

Outdoors. Used to have house buns and loved having them inside, Max loves it outside now though so don't think I'd bring them in.

I have 5 indoors and 1 outdoors and a foster bun outside.

Initially for interaction and more space.

Frankie and Kassy came in because of Frankie's respiratory problems and Merlin and Wesley had snuffles and EC respectively so better to keep an eye on them.

Frankie and Kassy would actually prefer to be outside though.

Indoors. There are foxes everywhere and I hate the cold so would never see her if she was outside. Besides, we have no garden.

Indoors wins hands down in my eyes.

No outdoor set up will ever match my indoor bedrooms.

You pick up on illness much quicker.

You get to learn how they want their routine and how they like things to be done.

Its safe from other animals.

You have much more contact with them.

all my animals live in the house with me because they are my family.

i don't think i will ever have an animal that has to be banished outside while the rest of us are inside

Inside as I don't like cages/hutches/sheds, I like him to be part of the family, I like not having to go out in the winter to feed him!

Mine are outside
- It's easier for them to have lots of space outside (112sq ft) than it would be to have them inside.
- I just feel like it's nicer outside. If I was a rabbit I'd want to be outside in the fresh air and lovely smells, watching the seasons and the birds, away from the noise and hustle and bustle of the house, etc.
- No danger from electrics or household chemicals.
- No risk of destroying my flat and possessions.

However, we are rabbit proofing a room and bringing them in for a test run in summer. If they don't mind it then they will probably be inside in the winter and outside in the summer since I'd rather not spend the cold winter nights outside but in the summer I don't want to spend much time indoors.

On a slightly side note: I don't see my animals as being banished to the outside  I love the outdoors and if I was comfortable in my thick winter coat I'd be outside all winter as well as all summer!
I hate to see my animals confined to the inside, even my mice get to go outside in the summer

Outdoors....

My parents wouldn't let them be inside
We have dogs inside
Much more room for them in a shed outdoors than in my house
They are both used to and I think prefer being outdoors

My lot are outside because they have more space than they would inside, I think they prefer it, they have eachother to keep them company, they have safe housing all locked up and aren't paticualarly scaredy bunnies and cats and foxes don't seem to bother them much. I would have them inside and see if they enjoy more than outside it but my parents wouldn't let me:(

And these:)

Best of both

Mine have a shed and aviary outside now, which they are in when we are at work (which is 5 days a week full time) and our house is really too small, untidy and unsafe for unsupervised buns. Although our wires are protected, Sprocket has managed to jump onto a shelf before and I don't trust them to be in all day on their own. If we kept them in a cage indoors, they would have far less freedom than they get in their outside house. Whereas they can enjoy being outside, still have plenty of shelter from the elements and be safe now.

They get indoor time usually from 17.30 to 22.00 ish and more at weekends. This means that we get time to socialise with them, we can keep a closer eye on them and pick up on any illnesses etc and also supervise them inside. I have done it this way for years and have never noticed any ill-effects healthwise for the buns. Except now that we have S&W, they have both had snuffles this year (our first year of having them). I think they were probably predisposed to it, from what the vet said when we adopted them, having grown up in a petshop and having both had problems when they were younger.

I can't say whether bringing them in every night for a few hours does any harm. I know a lot of people have had buns with snuffles recently and a lot of those are house buns, so my feeling is that it probably doesn't help, but I also don't know if it makes it any worse. I do know that we are able to monitor them a lot more closely by bringing them in. I might also look at installing some heating in their aviary/kennel to reduce the extent of the temperature change, and if we ever get a conservatory I might think about moving them inside in the winter if they continue to have these problems.

mine are Indoors.

-Cheaper and more room (don't have to buy expensive sheds/playhouses/hutches). i like free ranging best too, so they don't have to be confined when they're indoors.

-Lots of predators in the area. i've even seen foxes and raccoons in the middle of the day! And predatory birds are a big problem so they couldn't free range the yard.

-More interaction

indoors

i couldn't have a pet outside, because i know that i would hate going all the way outside to spend time with them.
such a hassle to get shoes, coat etc on and go out to see them.

i love that on the way to the loo or getting a drink, i can give snowball a little noserub and cuddle as i go past.

if i only have 20 minutes i can get him out for a quick snuggle without having to go anywhere.

in the evening i tuck up in bed with the telly on and have snowball out. he runs around on the bed and comes for snuggles when he pleases.
i know that when i start to doze off, i can put him back in the pen within a few minutes and go to sleep.

when it's the summer time though and i have my own garden, i will be buying him a nice big run so that he can spend his days outside with me and my son :)

I must say I have had my bunnies in for a week & for as long as I can remember I've dreamt they could come inside. But not now, they stink! Probably as I dont have any proper litter trays but oh well.

All the other reasons too, such as, more space, they prefer it outside, parents etc
