  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ear wax advice please

If anyone has any advice on waxy ears I would appreciate some advice. Emily is always shaking her head. She has had canoral in the past but the vet said if she does not have mites etc just use olive oil. I've been doing this every week as Emily is always having a good scrat and shake and clearly she has wax. (I have a little light that helps me to see into her ear) I do not want to over do it but some of the wax it is a soft and creamy and I do not know if this is normal, her ears do not smell. She only went to the vets last week as she had dandruff and I was given a course of Xeno for mites but she did not have them in her ears. I was suprised the vet did not give Emily a thorough look into her ears as I mentioned her ongoing head shaking and runny eye but she said bring her back if she gets swelling around her ears. So £47 later I feel no more clearer.

I would change my vet!!

Vet should have looked in buns ears properly. Head shaking can be symptoms of ear infections.

I have thought about changing my vets but theres not a lot of choice and no many rabbit savi vets that I know of. The local Pets at Home use the same vets as me and say they are really good. It's frustrating to say the least.

Perhaps put a thread up on here?? Say where you are, and ask if anyone in your area goes anywhere they can reccommend??

It sounds more like a pus/wax combo rather than just wax. If so it is indicative of a bacterial infection. I would take Bun to a Rabbit Savvy Vet.

I would at least want a thorough check of the ears, and then abx treatment if a ear infection is diagnosed.

Thanks. I've rang another vets in Patrington Holderness, they said they had an exotic vet but did not say a rabbit expert.
The Xeno drops for Emily have Ivermectin written on the capsule. I've looked it up and it sais used for secondary ear infections although the ones given to me are administered on the back of the neck. I wonder if this will kill any bacterial infections.

Im thinking here that if its a topical application, shouldnt it rather work if on the actual infection itself than anywhere else?? Look at human medicine for example. If one has a rash,a cream is applied to the rash, as opposed to putting it elsewhere to get the same results.
I think perhaps not, in your bunnys medication.although Im not anything qualified.Im just having a think??

Check for ear abscesses by feeling round the base of the ears for malteser sized lumps. One of my buns had mites with abscessing developing a month or so afterwards. Due to have the second round of operations on them next week - ear canal ablation:(
